BUILDING GUIDE
Indoor Environmental Quality
JBG SMITH takes a proactive approach to maintaining good indoor environmental quality, and we are committed to regular preventive equipment maintenance, base building annual air and water quality testing, and staff training. Our annual testing process is to ensure regular building maintenance and operations are providing a healthy work environment for all occupants. The annual program includes examining the building’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, assessing the overall maintenance level, and collecting samples of air and water for analysis.
Most indoor environmental problems can be prevented or corrected easily and inexpensively through the application of common sense and vigilance on the part of everyone in the building. Success depends on cooperative actions taken by building management and tenants to improve and maintain indoor air and water quality. By becoming knowledgeable about indoor environmental quality, tenants are in a good position to help building staff maintain a comfortable and healthy building environment. All of the occupants of a building can have a significant influence on indoor air and water quality. Everyday activities like heating food in a microwave and using a copier can generate odors and pollutants. By being aware of indoor air issues, we can all help prevent problems. Here are some things tenants can do:
- Refrain from leaving any food debris or open food storage containers in your space, common areas or the building grounds.
- Regularly clean, change water filters, and service equipment that uses water, e.g. coffee makers, ice makers, water dispensers, etc.
- Clean up all water spills promptly, water and maintain office plants properly and report water leaks right away.
- Comply with the building’s smoking policy.
- Place office furniture, partitions, and equipment with air circulation, temperature control, and pollutant removal functions of the HVAC system in mind.
- Coordinate with building management in instances when responsibility for design, operation, and maintenance of the HVAC system is shared.
- Avoid procedures and purchasing products that can cause air quality problems.
- Maintain a good collaborative working relationship with building management on indoor environmental issues.
- Contact the Property Management Team immediately about any environmental quality issue by creating a JBG SMITH Connect service request.
